Many of you may not know……..How it all began….. Hard to imagine with the buzz surrounding the success of the football team to date and with over 75 boys participating in football, that just a few short years ago there was no football team. Turn back the clock to the year 2000. For several years there had been talk of starting football. However, there were always barriers: the cost, the facilities, a need for a coach, how could we be competitive in the large school conference we currently participated in? How would the soccer team survive? All were valid concerns and quite a difficult task for a staff member or the athletic director to handle by themselves. Logic suggested that a push needed to be made from outside the school, to help remove some of the hurdles that existed at that time. It was at that time that a movement was started by 4 sets of parents which would ultimately change the course of boy’s athletics at KML. All of the parents had a vested interest; they had young sons who would love to play football if it were offered to them. They also had fathers who had experienced the excitement and comrardery of high school football. They had mothers that had enjoyed the football experience in high school whether as a cheerleader, pom-pom girl, homecoming queen or fan. The school spirit that is generated by the school backing a football team is hard to duplicate, yet there are other by products that would also be beneficial. The participation of more boys in a fall sport was important. The chance for some kids to actually play a sport in fall in which they may not have had the talents to do otherwise, was very appealing. Not all football linemen would be agile enough to play soccer successfully. The strength the boys would gain would help them compete in other sports at KML, especially with the size of the schools in our conference that already had their kids weight training in their own football program. The following articles and agendas will explain more of how the football program got off the ground. The money needed was raised by the group of parents and supporters throughout the federation. Dennis Miller, head football coach at WLC, provided support and expertise in helping organize the program. The KML staff and board embraced the work and helped with the many administrative details needed to make football a reality at KML. The first game was played on August 28, 2001. Today we not only have a great support for the football team, we also have a great team, and the excitement is building for the future. |
